In 2004, Dr. Ricardo Febry established Hospice Associates of New Orleans LLC with the goal of revolutionizing hospice care by eliminating the standard “one size fits all” approach, which was often led by non-physicians. His vision was to replace it with personalized care plans, crafted by experienced hospitalist physicians who specialize in symptom management and end-of-life comfort care.
To accomplish this, Hospice Associates assigns each patient to a dedicated physician who oversees and directs the development of an individualized care plan. This approach ensures that patients and their caregivers have unparalleled access to a consistent hospice team—comprised of a nurse, nurse practitioner, and physician—available on-demand 24/7. As a result, patients typically achieve and maintain physical comfort within 24 hours of admission, while also receiving continuous counseling and emotional support from familiar team members.
Dr. Febry is board-certified in Internal Medicine and brings over 26 years of diverse experience to the organization, having worked in ambulatory, emergency, inpatient, critical, geriatric, and end-of-life care. He earned his BS in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico in 1980, followed by an MSc in Comparative Physiology from the University of Miami’s Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences in 1985. He then served as a Research Associate in the Departments of Ophthalmology and Pharmacology at the University of Miami School of Medicine until 1987. Dr. Febry continued his educational journey at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, graduating in 1991, and subsequently completed his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine at Tulane University School of Medicine in 1994.
After years of practicing primary care at Touro Infirmary Hospital, Dr. Febry founded Internal Medicine Consultants, LLC, a medical group dedicated to serving hospitals and long-term care communities in the Greater New Orleans area.
Dr. Febry’s love for New Orleans began when he arrived in 1991 for his residency training interview, and he has called the city home ever since. He met his wife, Helen, a New Orleans native, in Miami, and they married in 1985. The couple cherishes time spent with their grandchildren and enjoys cooking, gardening, and traveling together.
